Out-of-School Care
(Grade 1 and Up)

For more than two decades, we have given working parents a safe place for school-age children outside of school hours. St. Francis offers licensed out-of-school care in Edmonton, Viking, and Grande Prairie for children in Grade 1 and up.

👬 1:3 Ratio

📍 3 Centres

🏠 Dedicated Preschool Rooms

A Safe, Structured Environment

School-age children need rules, choices, and space to be themselves. Our OSC program balances all three.

👥

Alberta’s Caregiver Ratio

Alberta requires one educator for every 15 school-age children, and we meet that ratio in every OSC group.

On busier days, we often staff above the ratio so children get focused attention, especially during homework time and activity transitions.

😴

Drop-Off, Pickup, and No Transportation

We do not provide transportation between schools and our centres. Families arrange that directly, often by walking from a nearby school or by parent or guardian pickup.

Pickup is tracked through signed registers, and only authorized adults listed on each child’s enrollment form may collect a child.

🛏️

Dedicated School-Age Spaces

School-age children have their own areas separate from younger groups, with homework tables, reading corners, and active play zones.

Spaces are sanitized on a documented schedule, and children have input on how the room is set up and which materials get rotated in.

Please note: we do not provide transportation between schools and our centres. Families arrange drop-off and pickup directly.

What a Day Looks Like

OSC days bookend the school day. Mornings are gentle starts; afternoons are about decompressing, snacking, and choosing how to spend free time.

Homework Help and Quiet Time

Homework time is a daily fixture. Children have a quiet space, reference materials, and an educator nearby for questions.

We do not replace classroom teachers, but we make sure homework gets started, and we flag any concerns for parents to follow up on.

Activities, Snacks, and PD Day Care

Each week includes art, sports, board games, music, and outdoor time. We provide morning snack and afternoon snack at no extra cost.

PD days, school breaks, and summer programs run as full-day OSC, with field trips, special activities, and themed weeks.

How We Support Development

School-age children develop autonomy, friendships, and resilience. We give them space to grow and keep parents informed about what we see.

💬

Daily Communication with Parents

You will hear from us about how your child handled their day: what they enjoyed, how homework went, and any concerns we noticed.

Handoffs at pickup and a quick written note are standard, with longer conversations available on request.

📋

Friendship and Self-Confidence Support

Educators watch for signs of stress, exclusion, or struggle, and step in early when something needs attention.

We formally meet with parents each quarter to discuss what we are seeing, both the wins and the challenges.

🚪

Open-Door Policy

Parents are welcome to drop in any time during operating hours. If you want to visit on a lunch break or call to check in, just ask.

There is no need for an appointment, and no question is too small.

Our Out-of-School Care Team

School-age educators need patience, energy, and the ability to read a room of older children. Here is what we look for and require.
